In addition to that, yield comparison was made for the tubers of these varieties for their suitability to mechanical lifting. To achieve the physiological ageing the potato seed was processed by thermal treatment by keeping tubers 48 hours in 30 deg C two weeks before planting. Phenological observation during the growth period showed that the use of heat- treated potato seed will lead to a rapid plant emergence and flowering. The patterns of leaf and tuber development showed no significant differences in tuber development, but foliage development with the ones in two seed lots showed difference. The potato crop produces a good leaf canopy once the foliage has met between the rows. This happened faster, when we used physiologically older seed; the late maincrop 'Ants' was ready for lifting in the middle of August
