Machilus bombycina King is the chief host plant of the muga silkworm Antheraea assama and in India it is only distributed in Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur and North Bengal. Eight morphotypes of this species have been identified on the basis of leaf morphology. The seeds of this tree have a hard, brown, almost impermeable covering and germinate only when scarified or subjected to rotting. Under the present investigation, a comparative study of germination and seedling establishment has been made for the eight morphotypes, the seeds being obtained from the Regional Muga Research Station, Boko, Assam. Significant differences were obtained between the morphotypes: S2 showing maximum germination while S2 and S7 gave the maximum shoot length and S6 gave the maximum root length after 21 days sowing
