A field evaluation of the effect of rain on wheat rust epidemics
2000
Sache, I. | Suffert, F. | Huber, L.
The quantitative effect of rain on the epidemiology of brown and yellow rusts of wheat was assessed in a field experiment. Rain events disturbed the circadian rhythm of rust spore removal in a manner related to rain intensity and duration. All rain events instantaneously enhanced spore removal, but violent or extended rain events inhibited further spore production and removal for more than 6 hours. Rain was able to wash out airborne spores from the atmosphere and deposit them on leaves. Rain could wash out totally the atmosphere in 50 minutes.
