Phosphate sorption and desorption by eight acidic surface soils of contrasting properties was studied at 35 and 45 C. Phosphate sorption data were satisfactorily described by the Freundlich and Langmuir absorption isotherms. Positive correlations were abserved between standard sorption parameters and soil properties like content of organic carbon, oxalate extractable iron and aluminium, reactive aluminium and surface area. The values of freundlich K were higher for desorption than their values for absorption. The extent of such hysteresis effect in the phosphate sorption desorption behaviour was found to be high in soils exhibiting strong phosphate sorption characteristics. The data pertaining to the change in Gibbs free energy of phosphate sorption at infinite dilution suggests that the stability of the phosphate sorption reaction products in the given soils contributes towards the phosphate fixing characteristics of these soils.
