Influence of Clove Size on Growth and Yield of Two Garlic cultivars Grown in an Open Field and Plastic Tunnels
2000
Hafidh, F.T. (Omar Al-Mukhtar Univ., (Libya). College of Agriculture.)
Studies were conducted to investigate the growth and yield of two garlic cultivars (Allium sativum L. Cvs. Mexican and Local) in response to three groups of clove weights (4 gm; 4-1 gm; and 1 gm per clove) in the open field during 1994/1995 and 1995/1996 growing seasons; and during 1995/1996 growing season under plastic tunnels. A significant increase was obtained in fresh and dry weights; length of leaves; bulb diameter and weight produced by the mexican cultivar in comparison with the local one. At the same time a significant increase was obtained in those plant characteristics when larger cloves were used. Similar trends were obtained in the open field and plastic tunnels. It is worthwhile to clarify that subsequent increase in the fresh weight of leaves and bulb obtained when plastic tunnels were used in comparison with open field results. Independent of cultivar and clove weight.
