Studies on the growth character of Osmanthus aurantiacus Nakai in containers with varied volume and shape

We investigated the growth character of young trees of Osmanthus aurantiacus Nakai for about four years which were planted in containers with varied volume and shape. Caliper growth, tree height elongation of trunks, leaf number, photosynthesis, and root dry-weight were influenced by the diameter and the capacity of the container. In containers with smaller diameter, larger roots were less dense than smaller roots. The smaller roots were concentrated only near the base of the primary root. In containers with larger diameter, larger roots became denser than in the smaller containers, and smaller roots were also dense and were evenly distributed throughout the space in the container. The smaller and larger roots were distributed in similar depth both in the shallow and deeper containers. This study clarified that the tree growth tends to be stimulated when there is a mutual matching between the natural growth pattern of roots and the shape of the container
