Based on data of the crop situation index 86 on rice weather relationship experiments of early season rice plants in Kochi Prefecture in 1998 was remarkably poor. A comparative investigation was conducted for the main cultivar NATSUHIKARI and KOSHIHIKARI in response to rice culture growth in Kochi in 1998. 1. In 1998, the average temperature from transplanting up to tillering stage was high and total sunshine duration was inadequate on both cultivars comparing to the normal. 2. In 1998, comparative result on both cultivars (NATSUHIKARI and KOSHIHIKARI) shows that number of maximum tiller was very few with that of normal and percentage of 35% and 29% indicated respectively. 3. Heading stage of both cultivars (NATSUHIKARI and KOSHIHIKARI) were early by 9 days than normal. Maturing time were 8 days and 12 days respectively more than normal. 4. For both cultivars, the number of ears were less as indicated in percentage of 27% and 20% respectively, lower than normal. Also, 20% fewer unhulled rice per unit area than normal. 5. KOSHIHIKARI showed normal than NATSUHIKARI on the percentage of ripened grains and thousand grain weight. 6. Both cultivars showed low yield comporting to normal one. Yield was NATSUHIKARI and KOSHIHIKARI. 365.2g/square-meter, 479.6g/square-meter, respectively. 7. The main factors of the low yield in 1998 were; during tillering stage the number of tillers was depressed due to inadequate sunlight throughout the day and with regards to change to reproductive growth, the number of ear were not fully secure
