Effect of red light irradiation on petiole elongation and flower bud development in strawberry [Fragaria] under low temperature treatment in darkness

Studies were carried out to prevent the petiole elongation of new strawberry leaves by red light irradiation in continuous darkness under low temperature treatment. Elongation of the leaf petiole was markedly suppressed by both red and white light irradiation under the same conditions of temperature at 15 degrees C and a duration of 15 days. The cell sizes of elongated petiole in darkness were more than twice as large as those of non-elongated petiole with red light irradiation, although the number of cells did not show any appreciable difference between the two conditions. The degree of suppression of petiole elongation under red light irradiation was not significantly different among the three temperature treatments at 10, 15 and 20 degrees C; petiole elongation in these treatments was suppressed by about 60% compared to elongation in darkness. Furthermore, the effect of the suppression of petiole elongation seemed to be enhanced up to a red light intensity of about 0.2 W.m(-2), followed by a gradual decrease in the effect of the suppression with a further increase in light intensity. In taking account of the fluctuations of the light intensity in practical use, a red light intensity of more than 0.4 W.m(-2) should be used to secure an adequate suppression of petiole elongation sufficiently
