Effects of sowing time, planting time and planting system on the growth yield and quality of Chinese chive [Allium tuberosum] variety "Green Belt" in forcing culture

The optimum sowing and planting times in the forcing culture of a Chinese chive variety "Green Belt" were clarified and examination was made on the appropriate planting system for improving the yield and quality. 1) Sowing was performed in January, February and March and, after raising, the seedlings were planted in May and June. As a result, the total yield achieved by planting the seedlings in May exceeded that achieved by planting the seedlings in June, when sowing was performed in February and March. When the seedlings were planted in May, the larger number of stems per plant and the more yield were achieved at the later sowing time. However, the best quality were obtained by sowing in February. 2) In the cropping type where sowing a planting were performed respectively in February and May, the intrarow spacing was set to 20, 27, and 33 cm and the planting density was set to 1, 5, and 10 stems per plant. As a result, the more yield could be obtained at the higher planting density in any intrarow spacing. The maximum yield was achieved at the intrarow spacing of 33 cm and the planting density of 10 stems per plant. In this case, the yield was increased by about 8% compared with the conventional case where the intrarow spacing and planting density were set respectively to 27 cm and 5 stems per plant. 3) The yield was elevated with an increase in the number of stems per unit area. When the number of stems per square meter exceeded 400, however, the yield was not elevated any more. The more dry weight of dwarf stem per stem caused the broader leaves. 4) Based on these results, it has been clarified that the optimum sowing and planting times are respectively February and May in the forcing culture of "Green Belt" aiming at achieving high quality and stable production. It is judged that, in this case, the appropriate intrarow spacing and panting density are respectively 33 cm and 10 stems per plant
