Superovulatory responses at the Tokachi [Japan] Livestock Management
1999
Kawamata, M. (Tokachi Livestock Management, Obihiro, Hokkaido (Japan))
Ninety-three Holstein cows were superovulated a total of 435 times between November 1990 and August 1998, and embryos were collected non-surgically 431 times (99.0 % response rate). The mean number of total ova and embryos recovered per collection was 9.8 and 5.6. Superovulatory responses of healthy cows and cows that had a history of reproductive disorders, were not significantly different. Responses were also not significantly different according to the number of lactations, but there were significant variations amongst individual cows. Cows superovulated 90 to 300 days from calving, and cows with body condition scores of 3.0 and 3.5, had the best superovulatory responses. Induced lactation is an effective technique that can be used to flush donor cows for an extensive period of time. It was shown that for cows with poor production of embryos, the removal of the largest follicle before superovulatory treatment was effective
