Generation of nitrate non-utilizing mutants (nit mutants) of 3 species of mulberry anthracnose fungi, Colletotrichum dematium, C. acutatum and Glomerella cingulata, was attempted for using ecological studies of the disease. Only 2 strains belonging to C. acutatum or G. cingulata were generated the mutants. The produced mutants were assigned to 3 phenotypic classes, nit1, Nit3 and Nit M. on the basis of their growth on the media containing one of the following five different nitrogen sources; nitrate, nitrite, hypoxanthine, ammonium and uric acid. Most of the mutants showed the pathogenicity similary to the wild types on detached mulberry leaves. Thus nit mutants generated in this study may be useful for ecological studies of the disease
