Yield components and the genotype x environment interaction in pearl millet (Pennisetum typhoideum Rich.) for double cropping

Two genotypes (G) of pearl millet from ICRISAT, tall and short-statured, were cultivated in double cropping. Yield components and G x E interaction were studied. Spacing (S) affected plant height, panicle weight and grain yield. Seasons (T) affected mostly yield and its components. Spring sowing showed higher yield components values than fall sowing. Closet spacing increased grain yield. Significant interactions were observed in G x S for panicle weight; and G x T for plant height, panicle weight and grain weight per panicle. No G x S or G x T interaction for the number of productive panicles, panicle length and g1-aim Yield was observed. Number of productive panicles and panicle length were considered to be stable and useful characters for selection for higher yield. Pearl millet may be considered to be a grain crop suitable for double cropping
