Selection of hardness of wheat under accelerated generation advancement

It is known that hard wheat flour contains a lot of vitreous particles, while soft what flour contains only a little as can be seen in observations using light microscopy. In the present study, these characteristics were not changed under accelerated generation advancement in a greenhouse. Then, reciprocal crosses of Kitakamikomugi (soft) x Koyukikomugi (hard) were made nd F2 grains were selected by quantity of vitreous particles using the flour fractured from the halves of grains (side of endosperm). The F3 plants selected from the F2 with a little of amount vitreous particles were fixed for 58-64% with a small amount. On the other hand, F3 plants selected from the F2 with a lot of vitreous particles were fixed for 33-43% with a large amount. The specific surface area of F4 lines selected with a little of vitreous particles in F3 grains were almost distributed in the range of soft flour characteristics. On the other hand, those of all F4 lines selected with a lot of vitreous particles in F3 grains, were distributed in the range of hard flour characteristics. The distribution of F1 and F2 from reciprocal crosses indicated that the mother plant effect was prevalent. It could be concluded that the selection of hardness by microscopic observations for the quantity of vitreous particles were useful under accelerated generation advancement in a greenhouse
