Suppressive effects against crown and root rot in tomatoes [Lycopersicon esculentum] by application of microbial improving materials

To establish protection systems against crown and root rot disease in tomatoes, Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. radicis-lycopersici, the suppressive effects of microbial improving materials supplemented with antaonistic bacterial strains were studied. 1) The effects of materials supplemented with P-10, a strain of Pseudomonas putida, and NB-39, a strain of Bacillus sp., were examined with application of rice straw after soil fumigation with chloropicrine. These materials mixed with rice straw reduced the disease incidence more effectively than with rice straw only. 2) The materials supplemented with AP-1, a bacterial strain derived from P-10, reduced the disease incidence with or without soil fumigation. 3) After cropping, AP-1 like bacteria could be counted on the surface and inside of tomato roots applied with the material containing AP-1. This result suggested that the antagonistic bacterial strain AP-1 plant was present on the tomato root and suppressed crown and root rot disease in
