Thenucleotide sequence of 955 nucleotides from the 3'-terminal of petunia asteroid mosaic virus (PAMV) RNA was determined using the pUC-cloned cDNA templates. The 3'-terminal region contains two nested open reading frames (ORFs) and a 351 nucleotides long noncoding region which shares high degree of homology with those of other tombusviruses. The two ORFs code for proteins with MW 21,638 (22K) and MW 19,396 (19K). The amino acid sequences so th 22K and 19K proteins were constituted of 189 and 172 residues, respectively. The amino acid sequences of PAMV 22K and 19K proteins share high degree of homology with those of tomato bushy stunt virus-cherry strain (TBSV-Ch), artichoke mottle crinkle virus (AMCV) and carnation Italian ringspot virus (CIRV). The amino acid sequence of the C-terminal region of the proteins was highly conserved comapred to that of N-terminus.
