Relationship between the incidence of alimentary tract and metabolic diseases and feeding of cows in Tokachi district [Japan]

In order to investigate the relationship between feeding and diseases of cows, the yearly incidence of displaced abomasum, ketosis and parturient paresis including downer cow syndrome and records of the annual milk yield per head in 20 locals of Tokachi district in Hokkaido for the past 6 years were retrospectively analyzed. The actual feeding practices and chemical properties of roughage were also examined in towns where the highest and lowest incidence of the 3 diseases were observed. The incidence of the above diseases varied in different localities. The incidence increased according as the milk yield increased in all the places, and there was a significant correlation between the milk yield and incidence of displaced abomasum and ketosis. The incidence of the 3 diseases in Ikeda and Shimizu towns was lowest and highest, respectively, but no qualitative differences were seen. The reason why the water content of grass silage in Ikeda town was lower than that of Shimizu town was thought to be due to the use of hay-lage. Moreover, in Ikeda town, the postpartum feeding amount of corn silage had a tendency to be lower and grass silage to be higher than that of Shimizu town. Subsequently, the feeding of insufficient amounts of dietary fibers was thought to have a large effect on the increased incidence of the above diseases, especially the displaced abomasum
