Yield and yield components in non-tillage rice [Oryza sativa] cultivation under stands of various green manure crops

Rice plants, cv. Kibinohana, were seeded in the stands of various green manure crops from 1994-1997. Under the canopy of alsike clover, hairy vetch and alfalfa seeded in April, the light intensity at the surface of the ground at the end of May was 5-10% of fill daylight, and the percentage of vacant hills was 20-30%. On the other hand, under Chinese milk vetch and crimson clover, the light intensity was 10-45% of Fill daylight, and was similar to the percentage of vacant hills on bare ground. The larger the number of vacant hills, the fewer the number of ears. Under alsike clover, hairy vetch and alfalfa, the number of tillers at an early stage was significantly lower than that under Chinese milk vetch, crimson clover or on bare ground, and the maximum tiller stage was delayed over 10 days. Under these green manure crops, the number of grains per head and the percentage of ripended grains were lower than those under Chinese milk vetch, crimson clover or on bare ground. Consequently, rice yield was markedly lower under alsike clover, hairy vetch and alfalfa than under Chinese milk vetch, crimson clover and on bare ground
