Field trial were carried out in trial farm "Peterlauki" of Latvia University of Agriculture during 1997 to 1999. Four winter wheat varieties were selected: early maturing "Donskaja polukarlikovaja; "Sirvintas-1"; medium late "Oto" and "Bussard". The objective of this study was to determine the effect of nitrogen fertilizer on the changes of chlorophyll content in different plant fractions of winter wheat. The chlorophyll concentration in the whole plant depended on the applied fertilizer rates. The chlorophyll concentration maximum was determined in the flowering stage. Direct correlation between the chlorophyll and the nitrogen contents in plant leaves at the shooting into stalk stage was established.
