Yield and tuber quality of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) in response to NAA [Naphthalene-acetic Acid] and yeast under different nitrogen levels

The study was conducted from January to March 1999 in farmer's field at Kapatagan, Digos, Davao del Sur [Philippines] to: a. evaluate the adaptability and yield performance of three potato cultivars; b. determine the critical level of nitogen for potato tuber production; and c. evaluate the effect of NAA and yeast and their interaction with nitrogen on tuber yield and quality of potato. This study was composed of the following treatments: cultivar (3), nitrogen levels (4), and plant growth factors (3). No variations existed among cultivars with respect to tuber yield. HPS 11/67 and HPS 7/67 yielded similarly with Granola, the check variety. The marketable tuber yield ranged from 9.62 to 10.29 tons/ha. Nitrogen application at the rate of 40 kg N/ha obtained the highest marketable tuber yield (11.27 t/ha) and 39% higher than the unfertilized plants. Most of the tubers formed were big sized tubers (40.75%). Based from this yield level and tissue nitrogen, the critical nitrogen concentrations was 2.3%. NAA (15 ppm) application increased the total and marketable tuber yield of potato by as much as 17.50 (12.63 t/ha) and 19.39% (11.14 t/ha) over the control plants. This could be attributed to the increased percentage of big (37.95%) and medium (33.86%) sized tubers formed. No variation was observed on the dry matter content of potato with plant growth factors. However, the starch content was increased by 10.88% with yeast application, but comparable to plants without growth factors, while the reducing sugar content (0.312%) increased with NAA application. Nitrogen and plant growth factor interaction increased the total and marketable tuber yield but did not improved the dry matter content of potato
