Effect of low concentration ethephon as flower inducers for `Queen' pineapple
2000
Obrero, I.Q.
A technology on the use of concentration ethephon (Ethrel 480) as flower inducer for `Queen' pineapple in a three-year, two-cropping experiment was developed. Four low ethephon concentrations (25, 50, 100, and 240 ppm) were evaluated against the recommended rate of 480 ppm. Findings showed that low concentration ethephon at 50 ppm caused a 99.33 to 100% flowering while the recommended rate of 480 ppm successfully induced 100% flowering in the two tests. Reducing further to 25 ppm will significantly reduce efficacy to 95 to 98% flowering. On the other hand, fruit size and quality including sucker production was not affected. The use of 50 ppm ethephon can mean a saving of P1,035 and still can attain a high flower inducing efficacy comparable with the recommended rate of 480 ppm
