Some aspects on the biology of Anisopteromalus calandrae H., a parasitoid of stored grain beetles

The survey and insect identification revealed that Anisopteromalus calandrae together with another two parasitoid species, Choestophila elegans Westwood and Cephalonomia spp., were prevalent in the different sampling sites. High densities of A. calandrae and C. elegans were found in places with high densities of stored grain pests namely: rice weevil (Sitophilus oryzae), corn weevil (S. zeamais) and bean weevil (Callosobruchus maculatus). The host specificity experiment showed that A. calandrae is host specific to bean weevils. A. calandrae had a high progeny production on this host species as compared to other host species. Its female progenies are in high proportion and with a longer lifespan. The host switching experiment showed that A. calandrae had a low tendency to switch in response to host density when their habitual host (C. maculatus) was not available. The penetration ability experiment revealed that A. calandrae could penetrate a one meter deep grain barrier to locate and parasitize its host within 96 hours and with about 93.17 percent parasitism on C. maculatus. The rate of parasitism experiment showed that A. calandrae had a greater rate of parasitism to C. maculatus incurring six progenies per day and a maximum lifespan of 25 days. A calandrae, considering its specificity to C. maculatus, greater parasitism to this host and penetration ability, was evaluated to be a potential biological control agent against C. maculatus infesting stored mungbean
