Influence of the reproductive stages on hematological and blood chemistry values of Philippine domestic hens (Gallus gallus domesticus, Linnaeus, 1758)
1999
Juan, A.G.
The influence of the reproductive stages was determined in young (1 year old) and adult (1 year old) native Philippine chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus). There was no significant differences observed between these groups of hens, except in erythrocyte, packed cell volume and hemoglobin concentration, which was higher in adult hens. Serum Na+ was maintained through laying and early part of brooding periods; serum K+ was reduced while Ca 2+ was increased. The plasma glucose is reduced while the triglyceride concentration increased during laying and then progressively dropped during brooding. Total serum proteins remained elevated during laying and brooding. The changes in RBC counts, WBC counts, PCV and hemoglobin concentration were temporally associated with laying and brooding. There was a tendency for these parameters to return to the pre-laying values during the brooding period
