Influence of shade on the photosynthesis and yield of mungbean

Pag-asa 3, a IPB mungbean variety was grown under four artificial shade levels from January to March 1998. Black nylon nets placed above the experimental plots were used to reduce light level by 40% (Shade Level 1, S1), 60% (Shade Level 2, S2) and 80% (Shade Level 3, S3). A control treatment under full light (SO) was also included. Carbon dioxide assimilation were measured at early vegetative stage on ten plants per treatment under differing light intensities. The net assimilation rates by the different shade grown plants under a given quantum level were similar. Increased shade levels reduced plant heights, number of leaves per plant, number of seeds per pod, 100 seed weights and seed yield. Seed yield was drastically reduced from 2.26 tons per ha of S0 plants to 0.33 tons per hectare at S3 conditions. As light intensity was reduced, seed yield decreased by about 50% (S1) to 85% (S3)
