Economics valuation of impacts of environmental degradation in Laguna Lake [Philippines]: phase 1

Results showed that lake pollutants came from numerous sources. These included domestic sources, non-point sources (e.g. croplands, forestlands, etc.), industries, livestock and poultry production, fishery activities and Pasig River in flow. Domestic waste was the dominant pollution source. There was also a projected increase in pollution loads between 1995 and 2000. It also appeared that there was potential reduction in pollution loads due to control measures. The increment cost that will be required to revert to the assumed acceptable level of pollution (not exceeding Class C) is projected to reach P135 M-P218 M in 1995 and P348 M - P730 M by year 2000. With regards to impacts on fishery, potential economic losses are large due to declining fishery productivity without additional pollution control. On capture fishery, this stands to benefit most from improved pollution control. Cage and pen cultures appeared to be less affected by water quality degradation
