Use of chemical dewormers to control nematodes of goats and sheep in the Philippines

Anthelmintics are widely used throughout Southeast Asia for controlling nematode infections of sheep and goats. In the Philippines, resistance to Haemonchus contortus from sheep has been described and various anecdotal and unpublished reports suggest that anthelmintic effectiveness is less than expected. One possible explanation is widespread genetic resistance to anthelmintics. As part of a study on the nature and extent of anthelmintic resistance in the Philippines a questionnaire survey was undertaken to determine the recommendations being made by veterinarians and other who advise on worm control for sheep and goats. One hundred nineteen `advisers' (veterinarians, technologists and farm managers) from 6 regions (1, 3, 6, 7, 8, and 11) responded to the survey. Seventy-one classified worms in small ruminants as `very much a problem' in their area, 111 recommended some control measures and 104 recommended chemical dewormers, 7 respondents indicated that they also recommend `herbal treatment' but the nature of these treatments was not specified. Albendazole has been recommended for an average of 8.0 years (range 1 to 30, 108 respondents) and macrocyclic lactones (ivermectin) for 3.6 years (range 1-10, 34 respondents). Closantel has been recommended for 1-2 years (13 respondents). Levamisole was mentioned by only three respondents who have been recommending its use for about 15 years. The results support the conclusion that the benzimidazole group of dewormers has been widely recommended by most advisers in the Philippines for many years.
