Benchmark study on the postharvest technology of onion and garlic

Some of the mature technologies identified for onions were: blower for drying, grader, mechanical sorter, dehydrating machine, cold storage and irradiation process. Farmers and traders need assistance to address the problems on storage pests and diseases, drying, prolonging the crop's shelf life, as well as other technical information. In Nueva Ecija [Philippines], physically lighter tasks such as cleaning and grading were predominantly women activities. Men performed harvesting, hauling, building/bagging, drying and storing. In Ilocos, there was no work distinction for genders. In the decision-making processes, the male members of the households consulted their female counterpart. At the trader's level, men dominated in postharvest activities. Both genders discussed before making a business decision. The males decide for risky matters. The females take the lead in public relations. The garlic postharvest system comprised of harvesting, hauling, drying, cleaning or cutting, grading, bundling/bagging and storing. Storage problems comprised of: insect damage, bulb rot, bukbok and molds. Garlic farmers incurred postharvest losses of about 9.83 percent and 11.59 percent in Nueva Ecija and Ilocos, respectively. At the traders' level postharvest losses were estimated at 24.75 percent. With regards to marketing, Nueva Ecija farmers complained of the lack of efficient market outlets and so they prefer to market their produce while Ilocos farmers complain of the stiff competition with low priced imported garlic. The identified matured technologies for garlic were: blower for cleaning; dusting chemical to prevent attack of insects and other pests, and the processing equipment from Italy
