Evaluation of water quality of Ravi and Chenab rivers and their sediments
1999
Khan, G.S. | Ikram, M. | Gondal, M.Z. (Soil Survey of Pakistan, Lahore (Pakistan))
Ravi and Chenab rivers water and their sediments were evaluated with respect to quality (salinity / sodicity / fertility) and temporal variability. This study was started in 1993 and continued till 1998. Waters showed a great variation in their salts concentration, ionic composition and sediments load. Similar trend was noted in the other parameters like Cu Fe, Mn, Zn, available phosphorus and organic matter content in the sediments. Water from both the sources was found to be enriched in different nutrients and its quality with respect to salinity/sodicity was within the safest limits for irrigation. Ca-2+ and HC0-3-1- were dominant ions. Increasing trend in sediment load were observed, which was an indicative of increasing erosion in the catchment areas.
