Four hundred milk samples collected from 100 lactating apparently healthy buffaloes were subjected to bacteriological examination which revealed infection in 110 samples. Twenty two samples were rejected due to contamination, while the remaining 268 samples showed no bacterial growth and were thus used as controls. An overall prevalence of subclinical mastitis was calculated as 29% (out of 378 samples). The Staphylococcus aureus was found to be the major pathogenic organism (38.0%) followed by Streptococcus uberus (13.0%), Escherichia coli (11.0%), Klebsiella pneumonae (11.0%) and Streptococcus agalactiae (8.0%). The infection rate was higher In hind quarters, although the differences were not statistically significant (0.1p0.05).
