Coral reef impacts and their relation to reef indices

Broad-scale impacts (both naturally-occurring and human-induced) were evaluated and their relation to the various coral reef indices (Manthachitra 1994) in eight coral reef sites in Luzon [Philippines] were analyzed. This was to complement the quartile categories (Alcala and Gomez 1981) which describe coral reefs as excellent, good, fair or poor depending on the proportion of live coral cover among the benthic lifeform categories. For the surveys made in Luzon, coral reef impacts were classified into siltation, pollution, fishing, storms, and coral extraction. Each transect location was scored as low, medium, or high for each of the impacts. Initial results indicate that in the eight sites surveyed, the variability of index scales was influenced by the intensity of impacts prevailing in those area. In this paper, the relationship of impacts and various indices is discussed for each of the eight sites
