A field experiment was conducted at the University of Georgia, Coastal Plain Experiment Station, Tifton, Georgia; to estimate the number of harmful and beneficial arthropods on different strains of cotton (including Stoneville 213, a susceptible cultivar as check), planted in three levels of pest management (A-intense, B-intermediate and C-Iow). MISCOT 7913-S, JBW 503 and GATIR 84-634 in level A attracted significantly more harmful and equal beneficial arthropods when compared with Stoneville 213. GATIR 84-663 in level B did not differ from the standard cultivar in attracting harmful arthropods but attracted more beneficial arthropods; while in level C, MISCOT TB 27-86 and MISCOT 7913-S exceeded the check in attracting beneficial arthropods but did not differ significantly from check with respect to harmful arthropods. Differences among levels revealed that beneficial arthropods played some role in regulating the number of harmful arthropods. Level C, where no insecticide was applied, had the highest number of beneficial and the lowest number of harmful arthropods; level B showed an intermediate number of beneficial and the highest number of harmful while Level A showed the lowest number of beneficial and an intermediate number of harmful arthropods. The harmful arthropods were at a peak in the last week of July or the first week of August, while the beneficial arthropods were at intermediate to high numbers during this period and after that, the number of the beneficial arthropods remained at intermediate level while the number of the harmful arthropods remained at low to intermediate.
