Sustainable Management of Wadi Systems in the Arid and Semi-Arid Zones of the Arab Region

Water systems occuring under arid and semi-arid environment in the Arab Region are vulnerable systems in terms of quantity and quality. Analyses of these systems indicate that they are under a high degree of stress. Pollution and aquifer depletion have reached high levels and the sustainability of water systems has become a major cause of concern. The Arab countries have adopted the concept of water security to address sustainability issues and achieve a balance between water resources and water demand under conditions of water scarcity. This paper highlights the sustainability concept and how to reach it in severe conditions.
