We have examined 40 samples of raw cow's milk from four different dairy plants in Eastern Slovakia as well as 54 samples of preserved low-fat milk, 30 samples of preserved skim milk, and 13 samples of preserved whole milk from shops and markets, for the presence of staphylococci including S. aureus. In the raw cow's milk, staphylococci were found in all the samples examined ranging from 1.0 x 10**2 to 1.69 x 10**4 CFU.mlE-1. S. aureus was found in 17 samples (42.5%) ranging from 50 to 4.0 x 10**2 S. aureus bacteria in 1 ml of raw cow's milk. In the preserved milk types, no pathogenic strains of S. aureus were found
