Species composition and nutrition content of the food of the brown hare (Lepus europaeus) in the hunting ground Trnava city in the West-Slovak lowland

Detailed knowledge of the foraging ecology of hares is relevant to the problem of actual causes of the drastic decrease in numbers. For the diet analysis, 74 stomachs of hares shot in intervals of one month, from March 1995 to February 1996, were used. The most important component of the food were grasses (48.5% on average), prevailingly represented by wheat and barley. Alfalfa represented 25.8% of the food on average, in the alfalfa growing areas, this crop was the main feeding component. Hares utilized mostly food supply, typical for the respective area, where they were shot, 85% of the volume consisted of cultural plants
