Chemical control of red tide phytoplankton (Chattonella marina and Heterosigma akashiwo) in the black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) ponds

Laboratory culture of red tide organisms, Chattonella marina and Heterosigma akashiwo, manipulated under the light density of 2,000 luxes, temperature of 28 deg C and salinity of 30 ppt, indicated that the growth rates of those two phytoplankton were 0.792 and 0.872 divisions/day, respectively. Chemical control (calcium hypochlorite, benzalkonium chloride and hydrogen peroxide) was used to treat Chaitonella marina and Heterosigma akashiwo. The concentrations of calcium hypochlorite, benzalkonium chloride and hydrogen peroxide completely disintegrated Chattonella marina 50 percent for 24 hours (24-h LC50) were 65.77, 0.29 and 38.51 ppm, respectively. While in the heterosigma akashiwo treatment the concentration of chemicals (24-h LC50) were 34.69, 0.12 and 15.01 ppm, respectively. Acute toxicities (24-h LC50) of calcium hypochlorite, benzalkonium chloride and hydrogen peroxide to the black tiger shrimp size PL-30 in the Chatonella marina treatment were 52.26, 0.17 and 42.10 ppm, respectively. In the Heterosigma akashiwo treatment, the acute toicities (24-h LC50) of the chemicals to the black tiger shrimp varified to be 50.78, 0.16 and 65.16 ppm, respectively. The chemical presented the best result in the control of both phytoplankton during the black tiger shrimp culture was hydrogen peroide. During the chemical treatments procedure, the water quality expressed little variation.
