Properties and fertility capability of sandy soils: Environment and characteristics of some sandy soils in Southeast coast and Central plain, Thailand

Study on environment and characteristics of some sandy soils was carried out on soils in coastal areas of Southeast Coast and lower Central Plain. Method of study included selecting site of sandy soils, soil environment analysis, soil field morphology study and laboratory analysis of soil samples based on standard methods and techniques. Four sandy soils were used for detailed study. They included Rayong series (Ry), Ban Bung series (Bbg), Ban Thon series (Bh) and Hua Hin series (Hh). Results of the study reveal that their environment varies slightly within a range of coastal plain and beach condition. They possess typical morphology of sandy soils indicated by prominent E and C sandy horizons in their profiles. The excessive amount of sands in the profiles influences all of their physical, chemical and mineralogical characteristics. Their chemical properties are generally poor to very poor both in their basic chemical properties related to availability of major plant nutrients and in their exchange properties. Mineralogically, quartz dominates their sand and silt fractions whereas kaolinite dominates their clay fraction. Feldspar can also be found in silt and clay fractions of these soils. However, since their silt and clay fractions are quite small, the influence of active minerals in these fractions on their chemistry is not readily observed. Collectively, they are poor soils and existing soil-fertilizer management technology in crop cultivation on them at present is not yet effective for their sustainable use or improvement.
