Effects of the rhizome quality and storage methods on the production of Patumma (Curcuma alismatifolia Gagnep.)

Rhizome of patumma (Curcuma alismatifolia) cv. Chiangmai was used to study the effects of the rhizome size and the number of storage root. The experiment was conducted in Nakhonpathom During 1995 growing season. It was unvealeed that the rhizomes with over 2.0 cm in diameter produced taller plants than those with samller size. The rhizomes with over 6 storage roots sprouted and were marketable fastest. They also produced the plant with the least number of leaf and the shortest peduncle. The quality of rhizome with storage roots did not affect the number of coma bract. Another experiment on the storage of patumma rhizomes at 5, 10, 15 deg C and room temperature for 1, 2, 3 and 4 months was also performed. It was shown that the rhizome could not be stored at 5 deg C. The ambient temperature storage led to the fastest sprouting and the shortest planting-to-marketable period. Moreover, the rhizome stored at the rooom temperature produce plants with the shortest peduncle. The spike with the highest number of coma bracts were yield from the rhizome stored at 15 deg C. The longer the storage time, the shorter is the plant. The rhizome stored for 2 month sprouted and was ready for market fastest. The sprouting time and the planting-to-marketable period were under the effects of the interaction between the storage temperature and the strorage period.
