The advantages of an immobilized fermentation system were studied and compared with a conventional one. Using the ethanol fermentation process with free cells for comparison, the effects of the operational stability of the immobilized biocatalyst were investigated. The concentration of alginate and cells, the diameter of the beads in the packed-bed and the packed-bed thickness were varied in the immobilization process. The comparative advantages of the immobilized biocatalyst were proved and an optimal immobilization procedure defined. A software package for the simulation and optimization of a fermentation process with free or immobilized cells was designed.
