Thermogravimetry is a convenient method for the routine, as well as non-standard characterization of polymeric materials. The changes in wood under various heating conditions were followed and on the basis of the obtained results the thermal degradation activation energies of several samples were determined. The thermogravimetry of several softwood and hardwood samples was performed, as well as of some beechwood components such as celluloses and hemicellulose. The application of thermogravimetry enabled the distinct differentiation of hardwood from softwood samples, while the differences within one group were less expressed.
