Production of vegetables in gardens of Belgrade [Yugoslavia] and heavy metal pollution of city territory

Ever more difficult economic situation turned numerous urban dwellers towards vegetable and fruit production in their own gardens, even in the center of the city. Since special care is taken in applying chemical substances, these products are usually regarded as healthy food. It is often forgotten, however, that urban environment is by a definition a polluted one, and that there are numerous air borne pollutants in city's atmosphere, among which heavy metals represent an important part. Paper discusses the properties of surface urban soils in central Belgrade (Yugoslavia) and their capacity to accumulate heavy metals, especially those linked to the main urban source of heavy metals in the growing season - automobile traffic. It has been established that only lead represents a serious threar to healthy food production.
