2001
Bensignor, E. (Clinique veterinaire du Dr Kupfer, Paris (France))
20 dogs with Malassezia dermatitis were included in this study. All animals were treated with the imidazole ketoconazole. One group received 10 mg/kg/day and one other group received 5 mg/kg/day. The two groups were compared regarding the clinical score (adapted from the CADE-Sl used in canine atopic dermatitis), pruritus and the amount of yeasts observed on scotch-tests. No significant difference was observed between the two groups of dogs for any of the parameters studied (p0.05). Secondary side-effects (vomiting, anorexia, apathy) were observed in four dogs. These results suggest that ketoconazole at 5-10 mg/kg/day is effective for the treatment of Malassezia dermatitis in dogs. Further studies using more numerous animals are needed to better appreciate the best treatment regimen for Malassezia dermatitis in dogs.
