The paper evaluates growth parameters (h, dbh, G, slenderness ratio) of a spruce young-growth stand tended by means of different intensity. In 1998, a series of comparative plots was established in an 8-year-old spruce thicket. Control plot 1 was left without tending measures (5,540 trees/ha), in plot 2 reduction to 3,100 trees/ha was carried out, in plot 3 some 2,500 trees/ha were left after cleaning, in plot 4 stand density was reduced to 2,100 trees/ha and, finally, in plot 5 the number of trees was reduced by the first tending measure to 1,700 trees/ha. Already after two years in autumn 2000, all 4 tending programmes were characterized by a markedly different growth dynamics as compared with control (annual diameter increment in tended plots amounted to 12 -13 mm, in the control plot only 7.5 mm; the slenderness ratio dropped from the original value of 1.00 in 1998 to 0.93 in the control plot, however, in tended plots it decreased to 0.80).
