Whole blood selenium concentrations were compared in dairy cows treated subcutaneously or intramuscularly with the injectable products Selevit inj. ad us. vet. or Myogaster E inj. ad us. vet. The subsequent 70-day monitoring demonstrated a highly significant increase in whole blood concentrations which fully compensated the existing deficiency. No significant differences were observed among the treatment groups. Satisfactory selenium concentrations persisted also throughout the subsequent 6 months. The development of selenium deficiency during the peripartal period can be effectively prevented by treatment of dry cows with injectable Se + vitamin combinations.
