This study summarizes factors influencing the length of productive life of dairy cows, overall lifetime production, culling, and economical aspects of milk production in the Czech Republic. The evolution during the past ten years shows an increase of milk yield from 3,982 L in 1989 to 5,255 L in 2000. The average culling rate was about 35 % during the past two years, 75 % of cows having been culled for health problems and 25 % for zootechnical reasons. The average lactation number was 2.8.
