Impact of policy and institutional issues on environmental resources

The availability and wise use of environmental resources to a large extent determine the food security situation of a country. Ethiopia is endowed with extensive land area, varied topography, soil, climatic and water resources, plant and animal biodiversity and underground resources, when compared to many other countries of the world. It also has a long history of managing these resources through settled agriculture and organized central governments. The use of these resources, however, has not resulted through time in the improvement of the lives of the majority of Ethiopians. empirical studies have shown vividly the degradation of soil, forest, biodiversity resources, and the underutilization of water, mineral and energy resources over the past decades. The paper attempts to show the general trends in the use of resources and commensurate socioeconomic development as affected by a few selected policies and institutional interventions of successive governments. It descusses possible lessons that may contribute to a better use of the country's environmental resources.
