Preliminary survey of parasites of fish at lake Chamo, Ethiopia

This study was undertaken to identify the most common parasitic diseases of fish at Lake Chamo so as to gather baseline information on pathology of fish in Ethiopia. A total of 583 fish of different species were sampled during 2997-98. The major parasites identified include contracaecum species from the mesentery of 43 Catfish (Clarias gariepinus), 4 Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), 3 Tiger fish (Hydrocynus forskalii), 2 Bagrus (Bagrus docmac), and I Nile perch (Lates niloticus). 28 of Nile tilapia (o. niloticus) were found to carry clinostomum species in their branchial cavity. Amplicaecum species were recovered from 21 of Catfish (C. gariepinus). for the first time presence of the two larval nematodes Porrocaecum and Eustrongylides species is noticed in this country. Pleroceroids of cestodes were found only encysted in the abdominal tissues and organs (liver, intestine, stomach) of 39 of Synodontis schall. The significance of these pathogens as causes of diseases of fish is discussed.
