Change of part-time farming in horticulture in international context
2001
Bakos, I.
The production of horticultural products for fresh consumption needs special knowledge, permanent care and is only partly mechanised even today. Convenient paid workers are hard to find for peak work periods. Consequently, the farm size based on family workforce is much smaller than the typical size of farms with mechanized cultures in field cropping. In rich countries plantations of some hectares are cultivated with own machinery which is not the case in Hungary. The common use of machinery is an attractive possibility in case orchards of family farms originated by sharing the large sized plantations. Internationally the typical size of apple-producer-holdings is the family orchard of some hectares like the new family plantations in Hungary.
