Development of a novel attractant trap for the sugar-beet weevil (Bothynoderes punctiventris Germar.) (Coleoptera, Curculionidae)

Recently an aggregation attractant has been discovered by our laboratory for the sugar-beet weevil (Bothynoderes punctiventris Germar)(Coleoptera: Curculionidae). In the present paper we describe the development of a trap design suitable for agricultural practice. The new trap is introduced as the newest member of the CSALOMON pheromone trap family. A special challenge in the development of a sugar-beet weevil trap was that in contrast to other, widely used pheromone trap design, which are suitable for capturing flying insects, in this case the beetle to be captured crawls on the soil surface. In the course of our research we tried to improve the design of soil level pitfall traps (i.e. Barber's trap) which are generally used by insect collectors to make the new trap more effective and easier to use.
