Physical examination and ultrasound are the best methods to reveal the presence of free abdominal fluid. Macroscopic examination of the ascitic fluid might be suitable to identify transudate and blood, but it is not enogh to characterize other fluids within the abdominal cavity. Citology and biochemistry (e.g. determination of creatinin, total protein) are very important to make an exact diagnosis.
