A field experiment was conducted at farmer field Batang Anai Padang/Pariaman district, West Sumatra during wet season 1996/1997. The objective of the experiment was to determine the growth, grain yield and farming system analysis of direct-seeded lowland rice (cv. IR42) planted after palawija. Five treatments were arranged in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with four replications. The treatments were: a. planted direct-seeded lowland rice after mungbean, b. after soybean, c. after corn, d. after direct-seeded lowland rice, and e. after fallow. Results showed that all treatments not affect plant height, percentage of filled grain, and 1000 grains weight. While, direct-seeded lowland rice (Tabela) after palawija (mungbean or soybean) gave more tillers number compare to corn. Based on result of farming system analysis, it was suggested that direct-seeded lowland rice should be planted after soybean or mungbean to gave highest grain yield (6.520 kg/ha for soybean and 6.245 kg/ha for mungbean) and gave good profit as much as Rp 2,682,000,- and Rp 2,565,250,- with B/C 3.17 and 3.16 respectively
