[Response of growth and yield of upland rice promising lines on the shading]

Varieties for upland rice culture, especially planted as intercropping must have high yielding, early maturity, resistances to brown planthoppers and blast, and tolerances to drought and shading characteristics. The experiment was done in greenhouse of CRIFC in Bogor, from August to November 1997 by using Red Yellow Podsolic Soil. Yield performance of 14 rice-lines and 6 varieties of upland rice was evaluated to shading. The experiment was arranged in a split plot design with seven replications. The main plots consisted of control (without shading) and shading (shaded with nylon screen, approx. 50 percent shading). Fourteen rice lines and 6 rice varieties were placed as sub plots. The result of this study showed that plant height, leaf chlorophyll content, and length of flag leaf were significantly increased by shading, but tiller numbers, leaf numbers, leaf area and leaf weight were significantly decreased. Yield components were significantly decreased by shading, filled grain weight was reduced by 21.05-63.11 percent. 'Way Rarem' (a check variety) gave the highest grain weight, followed by 'TB.203E-CK-2-B-Si', 'Jatiluhur' and 'Cirata'
